Welcome to the parents section of Thinkuknow!

The internet is such an integral part of children's lives these days. It opens up so many educational and social opportunities, giving them access to, quite literally, a world of information and experiences.

Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone, children and young people are increasingly accessing the internet whenever they can and wherever they are.

As you would protect your child in the real world, you will want to make sure that they are safe whatever they are doing. Like learning to cross the road, online safety skills are skills for life. If your child understands the risks and can make sensible and informed choices online, they can get the most from the internet and stay safe whilst doing so – particularly from those people who might seek them out to harm them.

So, how can you protect your child online?

The answer is simple. If you understand the internet and understand what the risks are, there are a number of things you can do that will make your child safer online...

Learning Logs

Learning Logs are a whole school approach here at Downside Infants and Junior School and encourage you to work with your children at home.

  • Learning Logs are expected to be in the children’s bags everyday.
  • They are not optional and must be completed weekly.
  • We will be setting two learning tasks in their Learning Log each Wednesday and will expect them to be completed and handed in every Monday. This gives you the weekend to spend some time on them with your child.
  • The two learning tasks will be related to recent teaching and learning activities in school.
  • Children can use a single page for each learning task, i.e. a double page spread for the two learning tasks each week.
  • Your child will be able to use many methods to complete their weekly learning tasks. Please encourage your child to use their imagination in completing the tasks. There is no set format and children may want to take photos, cut things out, paint, draw, colour, etc. Your child can complete the task however they wish, with your support, as appropriate.
  • You do not need to spend hours on the Learning Log each week, as most tasks can be completed in a short space of time.
  • Please encourage your child to take pride in their Learning Logs and have fun with the tasks!
